Laid off from Biogen.
When Biogen bought Reata in 2023, layoffs there followed within weeks, and its 2026 purchase of Apellis ended some Apellis employees' jobs on the closing day itself. Inside Biogen, the cost program announced in 2023 moved more slowly, with severance still being charged to it in 2025.

The most recent Biogen layoff we've found
In June 2026, Reuters reported, Biogen cut a small number of research roles and paused or ended funding for most Apellis research programs, and a spokesperson said the former Apellis clinical and preclinical portfolio was under a comprehensive review “to further evaluate strategic fit.”
What Biogen layoffs have meant for employees
Biogen's cuts have followed its drugs from both ends. By 2023 Biogen had slashed hundreds of Massachusetts jobs in response to a shrinking market for its multiple sclerosis drugs and the flop of Aduhelm, the Boston Globe wrote that July, and its April 2023 report put the Aduhelm sales division among the 2022 cuts and people who worked on the multiple sclerosis drugs among that spring's. On the research side, Biogen's 2010 plan, filed under its old name, Biogen Idec, and its 2015 restructuring each paired staff cuts with dropped development programs in a single filing. If your work sits in research or early development, the portfolio decisions Biogen has announced have repeatedly come with job cuts, and on the commercial side a product losing ground has done the same to the teams around it.
Research at Biogen has also been through a lot of leadership change. Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive since November 2022, told analysts in 2023, the Globe reported, that Biogen had had “five different heads of R&D in 10 years” and had made “overinvestments in legacy products.” The 2010 plan grew out of an evaluation run under George Scangos, then newly in charge, and the January 2025 research cut, BioSpace reported, was among the first big moves by Jane Grogan, who took over research in October 2023, coming after what she called an “extensive assessment.” In both of those cases a review came first and the cuts after it, so if a new executive starts reviewing your part of Biogen, those are the precedents on record.
The 2023 program also ran for years rather than months. It began with the job cuts named that July, BioSpace reported in January 2025 that its layoffs were expected to continue that year, and Biogen's quarterly filing for June 2026 shows severance still being charged to the program in 2025, reporting its outcome as net headcount reductions rather than as a layoff count. If you're at Biogen while a restructuring is under way, the 2023 program is the record's example of how long one can run.
Reata and Apellis both saw cuts soon after Biogen bought them. At Reata, according to BioSpace, Biogen kept the people essential to the Skyclarys launch while setting layoffs at the Plano site. At Apellis, some employees were let go on the day the deal closed, the same 10-Q records, and in June, Reuters reported, Biogen trimmed research roles as it shifted resources toward the approved drugs. If Biogen has agreed to buy your employer, Apellis's closing day, the last day for some of its staff, is worth weighing before you commit to anything that assumes your job continues past the closing.
For Apellis staff who stayed on, the merger agreement committed Biogen to keep base salaries and target short-term incentives at least at their pre-deal levels for a year, a promise it describes as solely for the companies' benefit. It also left both companies free to amend or end benefit plans under the plans' terms and stated that nothing in it required Biogen to employ any particular person on any particular terms. Its terms covered pay and benefits during that year, not whether jobs lasted through it. If you came over from Apellis and are still there, those pay terms run for a year from the May 2026 closing. For an unemployment claim, Massachusetts sets out its rules at Massachusetts unemployment benefits and Texas at Texas unemployment benefits, with unemployment benefits by state for anywhere else.
A sourced history of Biogen layoffs
May and June 2026, cuts after the Apellis purchase
Some Apellis employees were let go on May 14, the day Biogen's purchase closed, its June 2026 10-Q says, and in June, Reuters reported, research roles followed.
January 2025, research unit layoffs
Biogen began laying off research-unit staff after what research head Jane Grogan called an “extensive assessment,” a spokesperson confirmed to BioSpace, saying the aim was to be “more agile, efficient, and effective.”
October 2023, Reata's Plano staff cut after the purchase
Weeks after closing its Reata purchase, Biogen set 113 layoffs at Reata's Plano, Texas, site, about a third of Reata's staff, BioSpace reported from a WARN notice; a spokesperson said they'd mostly hit “roles where there are existing synergies at Biogen.”
July 2023, about 1,000 jobs in Fit for Growth
Biogen set out to cut about 1,000 jobs, roughly 11 percent of its global workforce, in a program it called Fit for Growth, and chief executive Christopher Viehbacher told reporters, according to the Boston Globe, that “there will be an impact in Massachusetts.”
2022, cost cuts after Aduhelm's rollout
After Medicare limited its coverage of Aduhelm, Biogen said it would cut an estimated $1 billion in costs, the Boston Globe reported, and its worldwide headcount ended 2022 at 8,725, down 885 from a year earlier.
October 2015, 11% workforce reduction
Biogen announced an 11% cut to its workforce, and its October 2015 filing estimated employee termination benefits at $70 million to $80 million.
November 2010, 13% cut and San Diego closing
Under recently appointed chief executive George Scangos, Biogen Idec set out to cut about 13% of its workforce and close its San Diego site, and its 2010 filing put termination benefits at an estimated $85 million.
September 2005, 17% workforce reduction
A Biogen Idec board committee approved cutting 17% of the workforce, about 650 positions worldwide, largely by the end of 2005, and the company's 2005 filing put the cost at $30 million to $40 million, almost all of it severance and related restructuring.
What to do if you're laid off from Biogen
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Biogen's biggest hubs: Massachusetts, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Biogen's hub states run: Massachusetts, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Biogen layoff and severance questions
What severance has Biogen given laid-off employees?
Biogen's filings give severance only as aggregate charges. In its 2005 filing, Biogen said nearly all the cost of cutting about 650 positions was severance and related restructuring, and its 10-Q covering June 2026 put Apellis integration charges at about $153.2 million, mostly severance and accelerated bonuses. If you came from Apellis and were offered severance within a year of the deal's closing, the merger agreement said it would follow listed Apellis plans, a promise made solely for the companies' benefit.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Biogen?
Biogen's filings describe what happened to Apellis employees' equity. When Biogen bought Apellis in 2026, their unvested equity became cash awards that, its 10-Q for mid-2026 says, vest over “the remaining requisite service periods of the original awards” and are “payable only if the applicable service conditions are satisfied, unless accelerated under specified termination provisions.” If you hold one, those termination provisions decide what a layoff does to it.
Has Biogen filed WARN notices for its layoffs?
Three notices tied to Biogen are in our WARN tracker, and Biogen's own name is on none of them. Reata Pharmaceuticals filed two in Texas, in Irving in October 2012, before Biogen owned it, and in Plano in October 2023, after the purchase, and Apellis filed one in Waltham, Massachusetts, in August 2023, before Biogen bought it.
Is Biogen laying off employees in 2026?
Biogen's 2026 cuts on record came with its purchase of Apellis, at the May closing and among research roles in June, according to Biogen's June quarter 10-Q and Reuters. Neither puts a number on the people affected.
