Laid off from Chewy.
Chewy tied the warehouse closings it announced in 2023 to automation, saying newer automated fulfillment centers filled orders more cheaply than older ones. Corporate jobs were cut too, in a late-2023 round that Chewy said reached several locations as it planned for the following year.

What Chewy layoffs have meant for employees
If Chewy offers you a move to another building, the site name alone won't tell you whether it works. The drive, the shift and its days, the pay rate, the first day you'd report, whether your years of service carry over and whether any relocation help is attached are reasonable questions, and having the answers in writing makes the offer easier to weigh. So does knowing whether declining the move costs you any separation pay or simply ends the job on the date the notice gives.
Chewy's explanation for closing its two oldest fulfillment centers in 2023 centered on its network. The company told Supply Chain Dive that their work was moving to nearby sites as it advanced its automation initiatives, and its CEO said closing them would let more orders flow through newer automated facilities, which the outlet said would help cut fulfillment costs. A few months earlier he had put automated centers in Archbald, Pennsylvania and Reno, Nevada at roughly 18% to 20% cheaper for filling orders than the older network. For anyone who left one of those buildings, that's a ready answer for an interviewer, since the company described the closings as shifting work from its oldest centers into newer automated ones, and talking about a layoff in interviews covers how to say it.
The corporate round on record came in November 2023, and Chewy's CEO described it on a December 2023 call as consolidating some roles during planning for the next year while the company kept investing in other areas. Directors and a vice president were among those let go, sources told TechCrunch, and for people holding senior leadership stock awards, their award terms reach past the last day. The award agreement Chewy filed in 2024 for senior leaders' restricted stock units bars holders, for two years after leaving, from doing similar work for a competitor in their territory, and it treats anyone at director level or above as having covered Chewy's business across the whole country. Its list of competitors takes in online and mail-order pharmacies, pet-focused stores and online sellers that carry pet products among many other categories, though veterinarians and practice managers in Chewy Vet Care clinics are exempt from that clause. If you hold one of these awards and a pet retailer or pharmacy comes calling, it's worth knowing what the agreement's appendix covers.
As of March 2026, none of Chewy's employees were represented by a union, Chewy said in its annual report for fiscal 2025, so no labor contract sets what a layoff pays there. The same report said Chewy was using staffing agencies to supplement its workforce, and people placed by an agency weren't part of the roughly 18,000 it counted as employees. If Chewy hands you a separation agreement, it's fair to ask what written policy produced its number, what you'd be waiving in exchange and how many days you have to answer, which matters if you plan on negotiating severance.
The report also lists health insurance and a 401(k) plan among Chewy's benefits, and if you had either through Chewy, how COBRA works and moving or keeping a 401(k) cover the general rules. Chewy has filed notices in Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Kansas, going by our WARN tracker, and TechCrunch put its headquarters in Florida and Boston, so the unemployment pages for Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Kansas, Florida and Massachusetts cover the states its own records point to.
A sourced history of Chewy layoffs
March 2025, Chewy plans 674 layoffs at Dallas fulfillment center
Chewy's letter to Texas set the layoffs for May 10 and called them permanent, with the site to remain open in a substantially reduced capacity, as the Dallas Morning News and MySA described it.
November 2023, Chewy lays off more than 200 employees
Chewy confirmed to TechCrunch that more than 200 people across several locations were laid off; sources placed some at its Plantation, Florida headquarters and in HR, recruiting and data roles. Its CEO dated the cuts to November on a December 2023 call.
March 2023, Chewy moves to close two oldest fulfillment centers
Everyone at the Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and McCarran, Nevada centers, 522 and 306 people, was offered a move to another fulfillment center, a spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive; WARN notices dated March 22 set separations from June 3 for anyone who declined.
What to do if you're laid off from Chewy
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Chewy's biggest hubs: Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Kansas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Chewy's hub states run: Texas, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Kansas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Chewy layoff and severance questions
What severance has Chewy given laid-off employees?
In the late-2023 corporate cuts, posts on the forum Blind described at least one month of severance plus extra weeks for tenure, according to TechCrunch; those are unverified employee accounts. Chewy's own figures are company totals rather than anyone's terms, about $14 million in severance-related expenses from the fourth quarter's corporate restructuring, per its finance chief on a March 2024 call, and $6.3 million in fiscal 2025 that its annual report ties to no particular cut.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Chewy?
Chewy's filed senior leadership award agreement for restricted stock units says units that haven't vested are forfeited when service ends for any reason, unless the committee running the plan provides otherwise. Vested units become shares within 20 business days of the vesting date. If a holder breaches the agreement's commitments, including its two-year noncompete, Chewy can demand back the after-tax proceeds from shares already sold.
How many WARN notices has Chewy filed?
Chewy's name is on four filings in our WARN filings tracker, from Kansas in 2021, Nevada and Pennsylvania in 2023 and Texas in 2025, and none is dated 2026. The 2023 pair covered the whole staffs of the two centers Chewy was closing, 828 people in all, and Supply Chain Dive reported that every one of them had been offered a transfer, so the 828 counts people offered a move rather than people confirmed to have left Chewy.
