Laid off from Hilton.

More people work for the owners of franchised Hilton hotels than for Hilton itself, so a Hilton name on a hotel doesn't make its layoffs Hilton's. Where Hilton is the employer, at its offices and at many hotels it runs for owners, its cuts on record cluster in 2020.

What we know about Hilton severance and layoffs

  • About 182,000 people employed or managed by Hilton as 2025 ended
  • About 328,000 people at franchised Hilton hotels, employed by those hotels' owners
  • 873 hotels Hilton managed for owners at the close of 2025
  • About 45% of U.S. people Hilton employed or managed had union contracts in 2025
  • About 30 percent of Hilton's corporate headcount cut worldwide across 2020
  • Nearly 60 percent of corporate employees furloughed for a time during 2020
  • 451 jobs in two California notices since 2025 began, both temporary layoffs

The most recent Hilton layoff we've found

In December 2025, Waldorf Astoria Employer LLC notified California of a temporary layoff at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills starting in February 2026, the state's WARN report shows. It followed an October temporary layoff notice at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

What Hilton layoffs have meant for employees

Hilton has no employees at franchised hotels, according to its 10-K for 2025, so a cut at one of those isn't Hilton's, and neither are its terms. At many hotels it runs under management contracts, Hilton is the employer, through companies named for its brands, among them Curio Employer LLC and Conrad Employer LLC, both on Hilton's list of subsidiaries and both filers of notices in our WARN tracker. If the employer named on your pay stub is one of those subsidiaries, you work for a Hilton company.

Even at a hotel Hilton manages, the owner generally pays the operating costs and approves the annual operating and capital budgets, the same filing says, while Hilton may be the employer of the staff. Both 2025 notices in the tracker were classified as temporary layoffs in California's WARN report, which makes the return date the thing to find out. The state's report also shows whether a notice was filed as a layoff or a closure, which is worth comparing with what you were told. If your notice says temporary, consider asking for the expected return date in writing, whether health coverage continues while you're off, what happens to accrued vacation and seniority if the layoff runs long, and whether you're free to take other work in the meantime. How California handles an unemployment claim during a layoff is set out at California unemployment benefits.

About 45 percent of the people Hilton employed or managed in the U.S. were covered by union contracts at the end of 2025, and the 10-K says those contracts generally address pay rates, hours, benefits and other terms of employment. In August 2024 it was a Hilton spokesperson who told Hotel Dive that the Hilton San Diego Bayfront was still negotiating with Unite Here Local 30. If a union contract covers you, whatever it says about layoffs, recall and seniority is worth a close read, and the local is where to ask how it applies to a temporary layoff.

Corporate cuts at Hilton on record came out of broader plans, the restructuring and outsourcing of technology and other work at its Memphis offices that The Commercial Appeal reported in 2010, and the pandemic cost cuts of 2020, when Hilton's 10-K for 2020 says the company furloughed a majority of corporate employees for a time and reduced corporate headcount worldwide by about 30 percent. If you're furloughed rather than laid off, the questions that matter are when the furlough is set to end, what happens to your benefits in the meantime and whether it could turn into a layoff.

Where a package comes with a corporate notice, reading up on negotiating a severance agreement before answering is worth the time, and so is asking whether it includes the outplacement and rehiring help that Hilton's June 2020 release listed for affected staff. If the terms come only in conversation, asking for them in writing gives you something to set beside those 2020 details.

Notices from hotels where Hilton is the employer reach the state under its employer companies' names and sometimes under a hotel's name, so if you're watching for one at your hotel, the tracker is worth searching under the employer on your pay stub as well as the hotel's name. A notice from a franchised hotel flying a Hilton brand isn't Hilton's. For the state's notice rules and the other employers filing there, California layoffs is the place to start. Hilton's employer companies filed in Washington and Ohio too, all in 2020, and the rules for claims in those states are at Washington unemployment benefits and Ohio unemployment benefits.

What to do if you're laid off from Hilton

Hilton layoff and severance questions

Who employs the staff at a Hilton hotel?

That depends on how the hotel is run. Hilton doesn't employ anyone at franchised hotels, and at the hotels it manages for owners, particularly in the U.S., it often is the employer, according to Hilton's 10-K for 2025. Its employer companies appear on Hilton's list of subsidiaries, among them Hilton Hotel Employer LLC, Curio Employer LLC and Embassy Suites Employer LLC.

What severance has Hilton given laid-off employees?

When Hilton announced about 2,100 corporate role cuts in 2020, its June 16, 2020 release said affected corporate staff would receive severance pay, outplacement support, online alumni resources and faster rehiring once travel resumed, plus extended Go Hilton travel access and Hilton Honors status. At franchised hotels Hilton doesn't employ the staff, the company's 10-K for 2025 says, and no severance terms for staff at the hotels Hilton manages are on record.

Is Hilton laying off employees in 2026?

No notice dated 2026 from Hilton or its employer companies has reached our WARN tracker as of October 2026. A 2026 layoff date can still sit on an older notice, as it does on the December 2025 one for the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, whose temporary layoff was set for February 2026 in the state's report.
