Laid off from Marriott.
When the Sheraton Inner Harbor in Baltimore gave notice in 2025 that it would stop operating under the brand, Marriott encouraged its staff to apply for jobs elsewhere in the company. In 2026 Marriott, which leases and runs the Atlantic City Sheraton, expected it to close without state aid.

The most recent Marriott layoff we've found
Marriott and Tom Scannapieco, a principal of the Atlantic City Sheraton's owner, expected the hotel to close Dec. 15 without state aid, Shore Local reported on Sept. 24, 2026, as the owners sought tax credits for a roughly $100 million plan to turn 130 of its 502 rooms into apartments.
What Marriott layoffs have meant for employees
The name on a Marriott layoff notice may not say Marriott. Baltimore's Sheraton Inner Harbor, which The Banner reported was owned by Nancy Hackerman, filed its notice under Sheraton Operating, and the Atlantic City Sheraton filed under Headquarters Hotel Mgmt, both listed among Marriott's subsidiaries in its 2025 Exhibit 21. In 2020, our WARN tracker shows, WHC Payroll Company filed for 1,136 jobs at the Walt Disney World Swan and Marriott Hotel Services for 2,325 at the Gaylord Opryland resort. A search of a state's list may turn up a hotel's notice faster under the company on a W-2 or pay stub than under the brand on the sign.
For the Atlantic City Sheraton's staff, the hotel's future has been waiting on state aid for the owner's plan. The owner's principal, Tom Scannapieco, told Shore Local that many of them had been with the property more than 20 years and had kept it highly rated through a difficult stretch. Watching that much of a working life ride on a funding decision is hard. New Jersey's WARN statute adds a safeguard there, since in a layoff it covers, a waiver of the severance the statute itself requires doesn't take effect unless a court or New Jersey's labor commissioner approves the waiver. If the statute covers your layoff and you're asked to sign away that statutory severance in a separation agreement, the approval rule is worth knowing before you decide. New Jersey's claim process is laid out at New Jersey unemployment benefits.
Union members numbered about 19,000 of the roughly 115,000 people Marriott employed in the U.S. when 2025 ended, a figure from its 2025 10-K, and if a collective bargaining agreement covers your job, its layoff, recall and severance terms are worth reading alongside anything Marriott offers, and a union representative can explain how they apply to a closing or a cut.
Marriott's 2024 corporate cuts came with choices that deserve a close look. Ahead of the November 2024 cuts, some staff were offered early retirement, Skift reported, and three sources told the outlet that people whose jobs were eliminated could apply for openings reserved for internal candidates. By Skift's math, the Maryland notice reached about 16% of the roughly 5,000 workers tied to the headquarters. If your job is eliminated, you're invited to apply for an internal opening and severance has been offered, you can ask whether applying, or accepting the new job, would change that severance, with more to weigh in negotiating a severance agreement. If an early retirement offer comes first, it's fair to ask whether a layoff in the same role would carry severance and how the two compare. And if you're furloughed rather than cut, there's no harm in asking how long benefits continue and when you'd hear about a return. Maryland's claim process is at Maryland unemployment benefits, and for health insurance after the last day there's how COBRA works.
If your role at a Customer Engagement Center is among those affected by the 2026 changes, the new postings are where the practical questions sit. In October 2025, a source told Hotel Dive, most of the U.S. customer engagement workforce was remote, so it's worth asking whether a posted role is remote, how its pay and schedule compare with yours, and what happens to your current job if you aren't selected. For a claim, unemployment benefits by state has each state's process. If severance has been offered as well, you can ask whether applying for a posted role, or saying no to one, would change it.

What to do if you're laid off from Marriott
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Marriott's biggest hubs: Maryland, New Jersey, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Marriott's hub states run: Maryland, New Jersey, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Marriott layoff and severance questions
What severance has Marriott given laid-off employees?
For the November 2024 corporate cuts, a source told Skift affected employees would be eligible for severance varying by position and length of service, with outplacement help. If the Atlantic City Sheraton let you go and New Jersey's WARN law covers that layoff, the law calls for a week's wages for each full year worked, or the employer's own severance if that's greater.
Did Marriott lay off Customer Engagement Center workers?
Yes, Marriott told Hotel Dive in October 2025 that some customer service jobs at the centers would be cut, and a source told the outlet more than 85% of the centers' U.S. staff worked remotely. Marriott didn't confirm whether the reorganization described in a September 2026 Hotel Dive report would mean layoffs. In 2020, the centers' filings in our WARN tracker listed 482 jobs in Kansas, 200 in Solon, Ohio, and 165 in Doral, Florida.
Was Marriott my employer if I worked at a Marriott hotel?
Not necessarily. Marriott's 2025 10-K counts about 148,000 people it employs at hotels, customer care centers and above-property operations, plus about 266,000 who work for hotel owners with Marriott managing their employment, and it leaves out staff of independent franchisees and licensees and the management companies they hire. Marriott's subsidiaries include names without Marriott in them, such as Courtyard Management and EDITION Management on its 10-K's Exhibit 21, so the employer named on a pay stub or W-2 is the one worth checking.
How many WARN notices has Marriott filed?
Marriott and companies it owns today account for 131 filings in our WARN tracker, counting Starwood and other subsidiaries and leaving out Marriott Vacations Worldwide, franchisees and outside managers. Of those, 105 are dated 2020 and 54 are California filings, and the 3 from 2025 on covered 259 jobs at Sheratons in Baltimore and Atlantic City.
