Laid off from Hormel Foods.

Some Hormel cuts have targeted a single production line or a layer of corporate and sales jobs. Other changes sent a plant's crew to a new owner. Being the piece that's cut while the rest keeps running is its own kind of hard.

The most recent Hormel Foods layoff we've found

In September 2026 Hormel agreed to buy Brakebush Brothers, a Westfield, Wisconsin chicken company with five production plants, for about $1.055 billion, and its September 2026 release said it expected the purchase to close in the first quarter of Hormel's 2027 fiscal year, subject to regulatory approval.

What Hormel Foods layoffs have meant for employees

Hormel's late-2025 restructuring didn't rest on layoffs alone. The plan in its November 2025 8-K combined a voluntary early retirement program for certain groups of employees with involuntary reductions, the closing of open roles and select changes to benefit programs, so some eligible employees were offered early retirement while the plan also cut roles outright. Hormel's 10-K pension note says the early retirement offer went to eligible participants of the non-bargaining unit pension plan and added a one-time enhancement based on years of service, subject to minimum and maximum limits. Long service is common there, with about half of Hormel's workforce at five years or more as of October 2025, by the count in its fiscal 2025 annual report. If an enhanced pension is on the table for you, it's worth asking for the enhanced figure in writing. If you're also unsure whether your own role is affected, you can ask whether severance would apply, and how much, if it were cut. You can also ask whether the restructuring's changes to benefit programs affect you.

On the plant floor the trade-off has looked different. At the Barron hatchery, by the account WEAU gave of Hormel's paperwork, severance pay eligibility went to employees who hadn't resigned or accepted a company transfer by June 28, so taking a transfer and keeping that eligibility pulled against each other. If a notice gives you a separation date and you're weighing a transfer or another job before it, it can help to ask in writing whether either step would change what you're eligible for. Union contracts covered about a fifth of Hormel's employees at the end of fiscal 2025, the same annual report shows, and the Tucker letter went to the United Food and Commercial Workers as well as the city and the state. A spokesperson said, in comments Atlanta News First carried, that Hormel would work with the union to support those affected. If you're covered by a union contract, it's worth asking the union local whether the contract addresses layoffs, recall or severance before you count on any of them.

Some Hormel jobs have changed hands instead of ending. When Hormel sold its whole-bird turkey operation, the Melrose plant's crew went to the buyer, according to Willmar Radio. Hormel has planned for crews to follow the work before, too. When it set out to close Jennie-O's Benson Avenue plant in Willmar, Twin Cities Business reported, it said the employees would go to a larger plant in the same city with no layoffs expected. If your part of Hormel is sold, it's worth asking the buyer in writing whether your start date, pay, paid time off and seniority carry over. And if you were in a Hormel pension plan, you can ask the plan for a benefit statement and for how a sale or a layoff changes it, since the same pension note describes stated amounts per year of service for some bargaining-unit staff and final-pay formulas or cash balances for others.

If you're checking for a notice at your own site, you can search our WARN tracker by company and state, and Jennie-O and Mexican Accent filings sit under those names. If you worked at a Minnesota site, our Minnesota unemployment benefits page covers filing a claim there, and the Georgia and Wisconsin pages do the same for those states. A cut that leaves your coworkers on the line can upend your plans as thoroughly as a closing, and it's fair to treat it as a real loss.

Hormel Foods layoff and severance questions

What severance has Hormel Foods given laid-off employees?

Both the August 2025 Tucker letter that Atlanta News First quoted and the 2024 Barron hatchery paperwork that WEAU described made the people losing jobs severance pay eligible, and at Barron that hinged on not resigning or taking a company transfer first. For the 2025 corporate and sales cuts, the fiscal 2026 10-Q shows cash severance of $6.7 million, and neither it nor the November 2025 8-K sets out a per-person formula.

Did Hormel sell Jennie-O?

Hormel kept the Jennie-O brand, according to Willmar Radio, along with its ground turkey, deli meat and turkey burger lines. What it sold in April 2026, per its 10-Q divestiture note, was the whole-bird turkey business, which took in a Swanville, Minnesota feed mill as well as the Melrose plant, and the buyer is contracted to co-manufacture for Hormel.

Is Hormel closing its Tucker, Georgia plant?

In August 2025 a Hormel spokesperson said the company would discontinue bacon production at the plant, and Atlanta News First reported that the facility, which employed 400 and also makes Hormel chili and Dinty Moore stew, would keep operating while bacon moved to other facilities. Of the 135 jobs being cut there, 40 were pre-cook production positions and 31 were canning jobs.

Our WARN tracker holds 4 filings under the Hormel, Mexican Accent and Jennie-O names, from a December 2014 filing for 113 jobs in Stockton, California to the 135-job Tucker, Georgia row.
