Laid off from Smithfield Foods.

Several of Smithfield's cuts on record shut a whole operation, the Vernon pork plant and a group of Missouri hog farms in 2023 among them, and in 2026 it set its Springfield sausage plant to close. Watching your site wind down is hard, and the terms changed with each closing.

What Smithfield Foods layoffs have meant for employees

What Smithfield offered people who wanted to stay on has differed by site. At Vernon the offer included relocation to other Smithfield facilities, according to Food Dive; at Charlotte the company said it would discuss options including transfers, in the announcement Food Engineering reported; and at Springfield a spokesperson told MEAT+POULTRY that workers could apply for other Smithfield positions. The Springfield letter let workers ask about openings in other states but not bump anyone there, so an application depended on a job being open. If you're weighing a transfer, it can help to ask how far away the open job is, what shift it runs and whether your seniority comes with you.

Nearly half of Smithfield's employees had a union contract or union membership behind them as 2025 ended, its 2025 annual report says, and at Vernon and Springfield the money for leaving went through union bargaining at the closing itself. If you're in a union plant that's closing, you can ask your local whether there's a closing agreement and how its payments are figured. If your local has a closing agreement, it's also worth asking what it says about health coverage and your final paycheck. If you're outside a union contract and severance is offered, it's worth asking HR which document sets its terms and how long you have to decide.

Smithfield has also offered people money to stay until production stopped, with retention incentives at Vernon and an hourly package at Charlotte. The Springfield letter, as Western Mass News printed it, had layoffs beginning around April 10, 2026, production ending around August 21 and the work of emptying the plant finishing around September 11. A closing like that runs for months, and a stay incentive pays the people who wait. If you're offered a stay incentive and are weighing another job before your date, it's worth knowing what the incentive asks of you and whether leaving early changes anything else you'd receive.

Office and support staff have seen a quieter kind of cut since Smithfield's January 2025 Nasdaq listing, which Virginia Business reported left WH Group as majority owner. Positions went in a reduction in force, the Lisle and Kansas City offices were set to fold into headquarters, and certain administrative and transactional processes were slated for an overhaul using AI and robotic process automation. If you're in a support role and have been asked to move to Virginia, you can ask what you'd receive if you stay put, since Smithfield's quarterly 10-Q shows termination benefits accrued for office staff not expected to relocate.

Smithfield has shrunk its hog operations since 2023, ceasing certain farm operations and ending agreements with some contract farmers under what its annual report's restructuring note calls Hog Production Reform, and it sold North Carolina sows and hog farms or farm assets in Missouri and Utah. If you worked for a contract grower, the grower was your employer, and the Utah cuts show why that matters. The 75 jobs in the Utah notice The Salt Lake Tribune described were Smithfield's own staff, while the 26 contract farmers and the people they employed were set to lose work outside that number.

Smithfield's filings sit in our WARN tracker, which you can search by company and state. If your job was at the Springfield plant, the Massachusetts unemployment benefits page covers filing a claim there. If a transfer, a stay incentive and a severance offer are all in front of you, setting them side by side in writing can make the trade-offs plainer.

Smithfield Foods layoff and severance questions

What severance has Smithfield Foods given laid-off employees?

Smithfield's terms on record have been set closing by closing. Announcing the Vernon closing in 2022, Smithfield said it had agreed with the plant's three unions to compensate workers, according to Food Dive, and the 2023 Charlotte plan that Food Engineering reported offered financial help and an hourly stay incentive. At Springfield in 2026, MEAT+POULTRY quoted the local union's president saying it was negotiating severance packages.

How many WARN notices has Smithfield Foods filed?

Our WARN tracker holds 25 filings under Smithfield and the units it owns today, from a 2001 Georgia row to the February 2026 Springfield, Massachusetts notice for 190 jobs, the only one since the start of 2025. They include two 2022 filings for Vernon plant addresses, one for 1,755 jobs and one for 121.

Is Smithfield closing its Sioux Falls plant?

Smithfield said in 2026 it planned to replace its 100-plus-year-old Sioux Falls plant with a new one in another part of the city. DTN reported that the proposed plant was intended to keep providing a workplace for the more than 3,200 people employed at the current plant, with construction expected to start in early 2027 and the plant ready by the end of 2028.

Can laid-off Smithfield workers transfer to another plant?

Transfers have come with limits. Springfield's layoff letter, in the copy Western Mass News printed, let workers ask about jobs at Smithfield sites in other states but not displace anyone there, and Food Dive reported that Missouri farm workers in 2023 were offered relocation where a position was available. If you're offered a transfer, you can ask whether saying no affects any severance.
