Laid off from JBS.
JBS ended beef harvesting at its Souderton plant in August 2026 and kept about 400 case-ready jobs at the same site, so one workforce split into the people who stayed and the people who left. Severance went to the bargaining table with UFCW Local 1776 rather than into a published package.

JBS layoff history
If you worked at JBS Souderton, the strange part is that the plant is still standing and still running. Beef harvesting and processing finished on August 14, 2026, and about 400 jobs stayed at the same site, cutting and packing bulk meat into consumer-ready cuts and retail-ready packages. Roughly 1,700 people worked there before that split, at a plant JBS has operated since 2008 and that stood as Moyer Packing long before then, built in 1974 and expanded in 1993. Two groups from one payroll walked out of August in completely different situations.
The state filing is the hardest number in this story. Pennsylvania's notice covered two addresses at the site, 249 Allentown Road for beef and 741 Souder Road for rendering, and 1,485 employees between them. Our tracker holds 4 filings all time under the JBS name, 2 of them in 2026, covering 1,693 jobs across Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The other 2026 filing is dated June 17 in Shelby County, Tennessee, for 208 jobs at the Empire Packing case-ready plant JBS bought in 2020. Both JBS notices sit in our WARN tracker alongside the other employer filings it holds. Those counts follow the name on the filing, and an audit of the same archives found Swift Beef Company and Pilgrim's Pride filing under their own names, outside the JBS match, so their notices sit outside every number here. JBS is the company behind brands including Pilgrim's and Just Bare, which makes this the JBS-named slice rather than a group total.
On severance there are no terms on record. Reporting in July put severance packages, health care continuation and a possible successor operator inside an effects bargaining process between JBS and the union. On August 14, the day harvesting ended, UFCW Local 1776 said severance benefits and expanded health coverage for affected members were still being discussed with the company. Some workers were expected to relocate as part of a severance agreement, and the union president said most wouldn't. The timing is worth holding onto, because Souderton workers were among some 26,000 JBS employees under a contract ratified in 2025 that raised wages and benefits and set up a pension plan the union called a new standard in meatpacking, and that contract was set to expire the same month the harvesting stopped.
The transfer offer repays a close reading. JBS said its transition plans included opportunities to apply for open roles at other company facilities across the United States, with on-site support during the transition, and that's an invitation to apply rather than a job in hand. The president of UFCW Local 1776 put the realistic figure at one or two dozen of the local's 1,500 members at the plant. Pennsylvania's labor department also says refusing a transfer to a nearby site doesn't count as an employment loss under WARN, and neither does accepting one more than 30 days after it was offered, provided the offer came before the closure, the break in employment runs under six months, and the new job involved no forced resignation. Whether any of that catches your situation turns on your own paperwork, so check the offer's date and its terms against those conditions before you count on a particular WARN classification.
JBS gave its reasons in its own words. The company said the closures were part of a strategy focused on growth, modernization and long-term competitiveness, and its chief executive said it must ensure its operations are efficient, modern and positioned to compete. Reporting in July added a historic shortage of cattle in the United States to what the company had said. Souderton ran a one-shift daily capacity of about 2,000 head, with recent throughput estimated closer to 1,200 a day, and accounted for 8% of the company's US beef-processing capacity. In its quarterly report, JBS booked $24.1 million under closure of plants for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, against nothing in the same quarter a year earlier.
The state help was switched on before the last shift. Pennsylvania's labor department activated its Rapid Response team for this closure, and PA CareerLink Montgomery County was coordinating support, with information sessions and at least one job fair planned as of the July reporting. Under WARN the notice generally goes out 60 days ahead, to affected workers or their representatives, the state's dislocated worker unit and local government, though the rules carry exceptions that can shorten that. Workers at this plant lived across Montgomery County, Philadelphia, Bucks, Berks and the Lehigh Valley, so Rapid Response and CareerLink are worth calling on wherever you live. Ask Local 1776 where the severance talks landed, and read any deadline on the paperwork you were given before you sign it.

How JBS's layoffs compare to other companies
Souderton sits in a run of beef-plant disruption. Trade reporting in June 2026 recorded Tyson Foods closing its Lexington, Nebraska plant at the start of the year with around 3,200 laid off, and Cargill holding a lockout at Fort Morgan, Colorado covering about 1,700 workers.

What to do after being laid off from JBS
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. JBS's biggest hubs: Pennsylvania, Tennessee. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what JBS's hub states run: Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
JBS layoff and severance questions
Is the JBS plant in Souderton closing?
Beef harvesting and processing there finished on August 14, 2026, but the site didn't shut down. JBS said it would convert Souderton to value-added and case-ready work, keeping about 400 jobs out of the roughly 1,700 the plant recently employed, and put more than $30 million into the site over the next decade.
What severance are JBS Souderton workers getting?
No terms on record. UFCW Local 1776 said on August 14, 2026 that severance benefits and expanded health coverage for affected members were still being discussed with the company, and reporting in July had placed severance packages, health care continuation and a possible new operator inside an effects bargaining process. The agreement that covered you and whatever that bargaining settles are what control the terms, so ask Local 1776 where the talks landed and check any deadline on your paperwork before you sign.
Can I transfer to another JBS plant?
JBS said its transition plans included opportunities to apply for open roles at other company facilities across the United States, with on-site support during the transition. That's an invitation to apply rather than a job in hand, and the president of UFCW Local 1776 estimated in July 2026 that one or two dozen of the local's 1,500 members at the plant would take one.
How many JBS layoffs are in the WARN tracker?
4 filings all time under the JBS name, 2 of them in 2026 covering 1,693 jobs across Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The 2026 pair is the August 14 Souderton filing at 1,485 jobs and a June 17 Tennessee filing at 208. Those counts follow the filed company name, so filings made under other group names, Swift Beef Company and Pilgrim's Pride among them, sit outside the match.
Where do laid-off Souderton workers get help in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania's labor department activated its Rapid Response team for this closure, and PA CareerLink Montgomery County was coordinating support, with information sessions and at least one job fair planned as of the July reporting. UFCW Local 1776 said it was working with the same state rapid response team on resume help and job placement, and helping members with citizenship programs.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from JBS?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. JBS's biggest U.S. hubs are Pennsylvania, Tennessee. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at JBS?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at JBS?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from JBS?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
