What Intuitive Surgical layoffs have meant for employees

Intuitive Surgical was growing in 2025 even as it moved to end Sunnyvale's night and weekend production shifts. Its full-time workforce was larger when 2025 closed than a year before, its Form 10-K for 2025 reports, and MedTech Dive, noting that medtech had seen tens of thousands of layoffs in recent years, called Intuitive no major participant in them and noted that the Sunnyvale cuts came as the company reported solid growth. The company framed both its Durham and Sunnyvale cuts around hubs, an east coast hub in Atlanta that WRAL TechWire said Durham staff were encouraged to relocate to, and what the Sunnyvale letter called a global hub model. In Sunnyvale the jobs were defined by their hours. Intuitive planned to move every production team there from four ten-hour days to five eight-hour days, The Robot Report reported from the letter California shared with MassDevice. The stated goal was to keep the night and weekend staff in roles on the standard schedule, in a spokesperson's emailed statement that MedTech Dive quoted, which also granted that those roles "may not be suitable for some of these employees" and committed to helping them move to other work. In Durham the choice was a move, and it started well before the state heard about it. The two numbers measure different things, people still weighing the move when the notice went in and the jobs the state recorded. If a move to another Intuitive site is on offer, it's a decision about a city as much as a job, and the rent, the commute and what happens to a partner's job are worth pricing while the offer is still open, alongside what a search outside Intuitive would look like in an industry that has shed so many jobs. Intuitive's pay programs, which its 10-K says vary by country and region, include annual bonuses, commissions, stock or cash-based awards and an employee stock purchase plan.
