Laid off from Nestlé.
A layoff at Nestlé hasn't always ended a person's work there. Its Modesto, California plant has filed temporary layoff notices again and again since 2015, and some closings and moves elsewhere came with an offer of a job at another Nestlé site.
What we know about Nestlé severance and layoffs
- 191 jobs across Nestlé's three 2026 tracker filings, in California and New York
- 58 tracker filings since 1994, 56 of them under Nestlé's own names
- 14 of 25 California tracker filings were temporary, in the state's own reports
- About 16,000 jobs in the worldwide cut plan Nestlé announced in October 2025
- Roughly 4,000 layoffs expected from the direct-store delivery exit Nestlé announced in 2019
- About 1,200 Glendale employees when Nestlé USA announced its 2017 headquarters move
The most recent Nestlé layoff we've found
Nestlé USA's Modesto, California plant was set to shut temporarily on August 31, 2026, with layoffs through October 4 and a return to work on October 5, the company's June 2026 letter to Stanislaus County said.
What Nestlé layoffs have meant for employees
Nestlé's 2025 plan is weighted toward office jobs. The company put the reduction under its Fuel for Growth savings program in its nine-month sales release, beside an increased focus on shared services and automating processes, and expected the white-collar cuts to save CHF 1.0 billion a year by the end of 2027, while Fortune reported, from the company's statement, that some white-collar roles would be automated. Philipp Navratil, the chief executive, said in the release that the company would make the cuts “with respect and transparency.” If you've been told your role is ending, you can ask whether another Nestlé job is open to you and, if you're offered severance, how the amount was worked out.
For the 2026 Modesto shutdown, the company's June 2026 Modesto letter said every affected employee had been told the separation would be temporary. According to the same letter, the workers' individual notices said Nestlé wouldn't be coordinating services with any entity, pointed them to local workforce development boards and described CalFresh food benefits. If you're on a Modesto notice, you can ask whether an early callback could apply to your position and, if you're in a Nestlé health plan, whether that coverage continues through the shutdown.
Solon's notice was just as plain in the other direction. All layoffs at the Ohio site were anticipated to be permanent, with no bumping rights, Nestlé USA's January 2024 letter to the state said, and that letter followed a separate November 2023 notice for the same campus. If you're holding a Nestlé notice, it's worth checking whether it calls the layoff temporary or permanent, whether it names a return date and what it says about bumping rights. If a union contract covers your job, it may be worth asking your local what that contract says about recall and severance.
Most of the Glendale headquarters jobs were headed out of state. Of the staff there, 750 employees would be located in Virginia, 300 would go to Solon, Ohio and the remainder would be transferred to other Nestlé facilities, among them Purina's St. Louis headquarters, where the company was consolidating its IT organization, a spokesperson told FoodNavigator-USA in 2017. If you're offered a move, you can ask to have the location, the wage, any relocation help and the first day put in writing and, if severance is on offer too, whether turning the move down would change it.
Some Nestlé jobs have left the company through a sale rather than a layoff. When Nestlé agreed in January 2018 to sell its US candy business, including Butterfinger, Baby Ruth and Raisinets, to Ferrero for $2.8 billion, the deal, as ConfectioneryNews described it, called for Ferrero to take over the Bloomington, Franklin Park and Itasca, Illinois plants along with the confectionery-related employees, with closing expected around the end of that year's first quarter. If the Nestlé business you work in is being sold, you can ask whether your job is part of the deal, which company would employ you afterward and how your years of service and benefits would carry over.
Nestlé's filings in our WARN tracker carry a range of filer names, among them Nestlé USA, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Nespresso and Nestlé Regional GLOBE Office North America, and filings under the Dreyer's name count toward Dreyer's instead. If your job ended in California, Illinois, Wisconsin or New Jersey, the four states where Nestlé has filed most, California unemployment benefits, Illinois unemployment benefits, Wisconsin unemployment benefits and New Jersey unemployment benefits are places to check that state's rules, and for New York or Ohio there's New York unemployment benefits or Ohio unemployment benefits. If you're weighing a severance offer, it's worth reading up on negotiating severance.

What to do if you're laid off from Nestlé
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Nestlé's biggest hubs: California, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Nestlé's hub states run: California, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
