Laid off from Providence.

Providence's cuts didn't stop at its 2025 restructuring. Separate rounds followed in Oregon, in Spokane and around Seattle, and in 2026 Providence also moved to close its health plan. Washington employees covered by its layoff letters were told they could apply for other Providence jobs.

What Providence layoffs have meant for employees

If you work for Providence, the cuts since June 2025 haven't come as one announcement. After the systemwide restructuring Providence described in its June 12, 2025 release, the next rounds came region by region, from Providence Swedish, from Providence Oregon and from Providence's Washington employers in an August 8, 2025 letter to the state. Providence Oregon's chief executive said in her November 2025 message that the work would continue until revenue and expenses balance. By mid-2026 Providence had swung to $349 million in net income for the first half, from a $69 million loss a year earlier, and executives credited fewer mid-level executives, less agency staffing and trimmed services, Healthcare Dive reported.

The roles haven't all been desk jobs. Providence said the June positions were mostly nonclinical, and Oregon's November round was too, but Swedish's included frontline and clinical roles, spread across more than 100 departments. That August letter listed acute care nurses at Sacred Heart represented by the Washington State Nurses Association, therapists at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane and Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville, and home health aides in Chewelah. The behavioral health redesign the Spokane Journal of Business described at Sacred Heart in 2026 swaps counselor jobs for licensed therapist and nursing assistant jobs. Oregon's record also includes whole services closing. Providence Oregon had said it would close a Portland-area pediatric intensive care unit and a labor and delivery unit on the coast, and shutting its four occupational medicine clinics meant 43 layoffs, Willamette Week reported in October 2025. That report also put Providence Oregon's layoffs in the preceding months at more than 250.

The Washington letters spell out what leaving looks like. That August letter, Swedish's January 2026 letter and a September 18, 2026 letter each promise regular wages and benefits for 60 calendar days from the date of notice, and each says affected employees can apply for open jobs across the Providence family. The September letter adds a condition, that the pay and benefits run unless an employee chooses to resign before the separation date. If starting a new job early would mean resigning before your separation date, the letter's own words make its 60 days of pay hinge on not resigning first. For union-represented employees, the August letter leaves bumping and recall rights to the union contract, and it says non-represented employees have neither.

One 2026 exit came with a job at another employer on offer. Swedish's January letter offered its outsourced biomedical and imaging technicians comparable jobs with the company taking over their work, with no lapse in wages or benefits. Nurses in Swedish Edmonds' SEIU Healthcare 1199NW unit face a different choice under their 2025-2029 contract. A nurse still without a position at the end of a 30-day rebid can take layoff with severance or 18 months on a recall roster, not both. Turning down a job offer counts as resigning unless the offer changes the nurse's FTE by more than 0.2, cuts base pay past the contract's thresholds, moves the shift start or end by more than two hours, or moves the home campus out of region. If you're in that unit, the choice comes down to the severance weeks your service earns against how likely a recall looks in your department.

For Providence Health Plan's staff, the 2026 decisions cover the whole business. Providence went looking for a buyer in March 2026, OPB reported, and by August, with the Medicare Advantage deal gone, Providence was still seeking a buyer for its Medicaid plans and expected to say later in 2026 whether it would sell or close them, the same Healthcare Dive report said. Providence layoff and severance questions

What severance has Providence given laid-off employees?

When Providence moved to close four Portland-area occupational health clinics in late 2025, its spokesman said the 43 workers there were being offered severance, Willamette Week reported. Neither that report nor the August 2025 letter or September 2026 letter Providence sent Washington gives an amount. Under Swedish Edmonds' 2025-2029 SEIU Healthcare 1199NW contract, covered nurses still without a position when a 30-day rebid ends may choose severance, 2 weeks' pay after probation up to 8 weeks at 20 or more years, or 18 months of recall rights instead.

Can laid-off Providence employees apply for other Providence jobs?

Providence's June 12, 2025 release said people affected by that restructuring were being redeployed where possible into more than 5,000 open roles, and its August 2025 Washington letter said employees could apply to open positions at facilities across the Providence family. When Swedish outsourced technician work in 2026, its January 6 letter offered both comparable jobs with the incoming company and the same right to apply inside Providence.

How many WARN notices has Providence filed since 2025?

Five, all in Washington, covering 241 jobs in our WARN tracker. Four came from Providence Health & Services employers, from the 126-job notice in August 2025 to a 3-job notice in September 2026, and the fifth came from Swedish in January 2026, which the state lists at 50 jobs though Swedish's letter said about 44. Older notices include California filings by Providence hospitals and clinics.
