Laid off from Quad/Graphics.
Quad has been closing printing plants a few at a time for more than a decade, including several that came with its 2010 Worldcolor purchase. Its closing announcements have offered some skilled workers a move to the plants taking the work and the others a separation package.

What Quad/Graphics layoffs have meant for employees
Quad's layoff announcements on record have been plant closings, a plant or a handful at a time, and it has tied closings like Effingham's to shrinking print volumes and rising postage. At The Rock, Printing Impressions reported, it pointed to weekly magazines losing volume while postal rates rose faster than inflation and deliveries slowed. Quad had announced 47 plant closings from 2010 into late 2020, according to BizTimes, and the closings since then have included plants that printed retail inserts, directories and direct mail. Several of those plants came to Quad when it bought other printers. Effingham's direct mail plant arrived with Worldcolor in July 2010, as Printing Impressions recounted, and the Waukee directory plant came in the same deal, according to Printing Impressions' Waukee report. Greenville's insert plant, Printing Impressions' Greenville report noted, was part of the Vertis assets Quad bought in January 2013.
Across these closings the terms have been alike. Quad has described a near-identical separation package, severance pay with continued healthcare and help from a career counseling company, from Merced in 2023, according to Printing Impressions, to Greenville in 2025, and it has offered moves to the plants receiving the work, sometimes only to skilled workers. Quad's Saratoga Springs announcement, Printing Impressions reported, tied that focus on skills to an industry-wide labor shortage that made those employees' expertise needed. If you're offered both a move and the package, you can set them side by side. The receiving plant and its shift sit on one side, and the package's pay and health coverage on the other.
Where the work goes matters for anyone weighing a move. Work from The Rock was set to go to the Wisconsin plants Quad named, in Burlington, Franklin, Hartford, Lomira, Pewaukee, Sussex and West Allis, and Lomira, Sussex, Hartford and West Allis are among the plants of more than 500,000 square feet in Quad's 10-K, along with Martinsburg, West Virginia. The Rock itself was among the plants named in January 2024 to take Saratoga Springs' work, a closing the plant manager there tied to shrinking newsweekly volumes, and Quad cited the same kind of decline when it set The Rock's own closing in December 2025. If a move is on offer, it's worth weighing what the receiving plant prints as well as its location.
The Rock's closing put every employee at the site on the notice, none of them represented by a union, and spread their expected separations over four dates, according to Georgia's WARN record, so people at the same plant could leave months apart. The impacted titles reach past the press and finishing crews to the nurse practitioner and clinic lead at the onsite clinic and the food service workers. Those four dates are the site's schedule, so if your job is on that notice, it's worth comparing the record with any date you've been given in writing.
Quad's own accounts attach a cost to these cuts. The same 10-K books employee termination charges when the company reduces its workforce through facility consolidations and separation programs. Those charges show workforce-reduction costs continuing across 2024, 2025 and the first half of 2026, the last period in its July 2026 release, as dollar totals for the whole company. Merced's and West Sacramento's California notices went in under a subsidiary's name, QG Printing II, LLC, not Quad's. If The Rock was your plant, Georgia's rules for a claim are set out on Georgia unemployment benefits, and the state pages are Illinois unemployment benefits for Effingham and Bolingbrook and California unemployment benefits for Merced and West Sacramento.

What to do if you're laid off from Quad/Graphics
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Quad/Graphics's biggest hubs: Georgia, Illinois, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Quad/Graphics's hub states run: Georgia, Illinois, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
