Laid off from Seagate.

Seagate's job cuts have come in bursts of restructuring, a string of plans from 2015 to 2017 and another wave from late 2022 into 2023. In mid-2026 most of its workforce was in Asia, and the plans have reached sites there, in Northern Ireland and in the United States.

The most recent Seagate layoff we've found

What Seagate layoffs have meant for employees

Twice, a Seagate plan's expected finish wasn't the end of the cutting. In 2016 the June plan was still expected to run into September when a much larger one followed on July 11, by the fiscal 2016 10-K and fiscal 2018 10-K notes. In 2023 the October 2022 plan, which the October 2022 8-K expected to wrap up within its fiscal second quarter, was widened on March 29 and joined by a separate plan on April 20, the fiscal 2023 10-K says. If you're weighing a voluntary exit while one plan is under way, those two years show how quickly a second has followed the first.

Seagate's filings state a reason for its plans, and the reason has changed with the plan. The September 2015 plan was set up to realign costs with the business environment and the October 2022 plan to fit operations to current economic conditions, while the June 2020 8-K said that year's plan wasn't due to near-term market conditions and tied it to efficiency and to investing in future opportunities. If one of these plans ended your job, the reason in its filing gives you a straightforward reply when an interviewer asks why, and explaining a layoff takes up the rest of that conversation.

On the ground the timing has run differently from site to site. Derry's accounts say its restructuring was substantially done when September 2023 ended, the Irish News reported, while a Seagate spokesperson had told Blocks & Files that most of the global actions were expected to be done by June 30. If a plan reaches your site, Derry's case shows a local cut can continue past the date by which the spokesperson expected most global actions to be complete. The local accounts also run from Derry's scheme, which people could choose to join, to the 2017 Suzhou closing, which gave workers about a week, as AFP's report in Hong Kong Free Press described. Pay has been part of the story too. In 2023 the most senior executives' base salaries went to zero for six months, the same Blocks & Files report said, and Seagate's annual report for fiscal 2026 lists temporary salary reductions among the cost measures it has used before.

In the United States the paper trail splits by agency. Every Seagate filing our WARN tracker has found came from California, while the Labor Department's petition list reaches sites outside the state, with groups of Seagate workers winning trade adjustment assistance certification at places including Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in 2016, Shakopee and Minneapolis in Minnesota and Longmont, Colorado in 2017, Oklahoma City in 2018, Valencia, California in 2019 and Shakopee again in August 2020. If your Seagate job was in Minnesota or Colorado, that list is where those sites turn up by name in a federal record. For an unemployment claim, the state pages for California, Minnesota and Colorado match the three states where Seagate's 10-K puts its U.S. product development.

Stock runs on its own timing. Under Seagate's October 2025 award form, four-year grants vest a quarter after the first year and the rest in quarterly installments, and vesting after a termination is measured to the last day someone actively works, not stretched by a notice period or a garden leave, that award agreement says. If you're holding units granted on that form and have a last day, unvested units generally stop with your active service, subject to any executive severance or similar plan that covers you and to the form's retirement and disability terms, since a notice period or a garden leave doesn't carry them past that day.

What to do if you're laid off from Seagate

Seagate layoff and severance questions

What severance has Seagate given laid-off employees?

Seagate's October 2022 8-K said that plan's charges would consist of employee severance and other one-time termination benefits, and its June 2020 8-K said it would offer people in that reduction in force additional financial support, but neither gives a formula or an amount. Derry's 2023 cuts included a voluntary redundancy scheme, and Seagate accepted far more volunteers than the roughly 100 redundancies it first sought, the Irish News reported.

Is Seagate laying off employees in 2026?

Seagate's fiscal 2026 annual filing puts $27 million of restructuring charges, mainly for employee termination benefits, in the year to July 3, 2026, without naming a plan, a headcount or a place for them. The last Seagate notice to reach our WARN tracker is dated November 2022.

What happens to my Seagate RSUs if I'm laid off?

If your units were granted on the RSU form Seagate filed in October 2025, that award agreement forfeits unvested units if service ends, whatever the reason, subject to Seagate's executive severance plan or a similar plan, except that disability or retirement lets them keep vesting on schedule, barring cause. Retirement there means age 55, five years of service and age plus service of at least 65, and a Seagate termination for anything but cause counts as meeting its 180-day notice rule if you otherwise qualify.

Has Seagate filed WARN notices?

Seagate's record in our WARN tracker comes to 7 filings, each a California notice filed as Seagate US LLC, from Cupertino and Fremont between 2015 and 2020 and two more in November 2022. Two 2024 Delray Beach, Florida rows filed simply as Seagate, both classed by the state as accommodation and food services, aren't the drive maker's. Our Minnesota rows only start in 2021, and none in Colorado carries Seagate's name.
