Laid off from Wayfair.
Wayfair's cuts have landed two ways. Office staff learned by email whether they were out, and the CEO's note that day set out severance terms in 2022 and 2023. At two Kentucky sites, notices filed months ahead scheduled layoffs in phases as the buildings were wound down.

The most recent Wayfair layoff we've found
Wayfair's Erlanger, Kentucky, facility was scheduled to close on or about September 30, 2026, as Supply Chain Dive reported from the October 2025 notice, which set layoffs there in phases from January 1. Wayfair's second-quarter 2026 report also booked a $2 million charge for deciding to exit a U.S. customer service center.
What Wayfair layoffs have meant for employees
If you worked in one of Wayfair's corporate jobs, the big rounds from 2022 to 2024 arrived the same way. Niraj Shah, Wayfair's CEO and co-founder, sent a note to the whole company and North American staff got an email saying whether their role was affected, as his August 2022 memo laid out. In 2024 the note also offered those cut the chance to connect live with their Talent partners. Learning from an inbox that you're out is a lousy way to end a job. The notes were blunt about why, though. Shah wrote in 2022 that he'd pushed to hire for growth that didn't come and took responsibility, and in his January 2024 note that Wayfair had gone overboard with corporate hiring during Covid. That's the company's own account putting the cause on its hiring, worth having in hand when you're explaining a layoff in an interview.
Management layers and seniority were targets Shah kept naming. The 2022 memo put thinning out management layers first on its list, Shah's January 2023 memo called that cut largely about reducing them, and his 2024 note set out to get efficient on levels and spans and to get back to betting on junior people. Those were goals for the company's structure, and if a role on your old team gets posted again, the 2024 plan to rebuild roles with modified leveling is a reason to compare its level and pay with what you had before treating it as the same job.
When Wayfair has decided to leave a place rather than trim a team, it has offered some people a way to keep working. Announcing its German exit, it gave part of the staff there the option to relocate to London or Boston, its finance chief told CNBC. Customer service staff in Bangor and Brunswick, Maine, kept working from home on its virtual team when Wayfair gave up those buildings in 2021 and January 2023, and the company said it wasn't extending leases at a number of customer service locations, the Bangor Daily News reported. Its second-quarter 2026 filing records a decision to exit another U.S. customer service center. If you work in customer service, it's worth asking whether remote work is on offer, since that's what the Maine teams were given.
The Kentucky closings were scheduled on a slower clock. Both notices went out in October, with the first layoffs set for the turn of the year and the rest spread across the next one, so people under the same notice were scheduled to leave on different dates. That stretch can help with timing a job search. Wayfair said it was helping Florence employees find work at its other locations, per Retail Dive, so if you were at Erlanger, it's worth asking whether the same help applied there. Kentucky's Rapid Response program lists career counseling, resume and interview workshops, and unemployment insurance and training information among what its local teams offer workers facing a layoff. Our page on layoffs in Kentucky covers the state's filings, and what Kentucky unemployment pays has the benefit details.
If you worked remotely for a Boston-based team in January 2024, that month's Massachusetts filing may be the one that counted you. Its 936 cuts from the Boston headquarters included remote staff around the country who reported there, and only about 500 of them lived in Massachusetts, a Wayfair spokesperson told WBUR. So that Boston row in our WARN tracker can cover people who lived and worked in other states. It's worth searching the tracker under Wayfair in Massachusetts as well as your own state, then matching the date, and our Massachusetts layoffs page explains what the state's filings show.

January 2024, 1,650 jobs and fewer senior roles
Wayfair cut about 1,650 jobs, 13% of its workforce, and reduced seniority in roles it planned to rebuild with modified leveling, WBUR reported. CEO Niraj Shah's January 2024 note offered severance, employee assistance and Wayfair Alumni networking support.
January 2023, 1,750 jobs and fewer management layers
About 1,750 jobs went in a cut Shah said was largely about reducing management layers. His January 2023 memo gave U.S. staff at least ten weeks' pay from that day, with benefits and equity vesting through March 2023.
August 2022, nearly 900 jobs cut
Shah's August 2022 memo said nearly 900 people would be told they were out. Severance followed geography, tenure and level and included any eligible first-quarter bonus, and U.S. staff were offered at least 10 weeks' pay and equity vesting through October.
February 2020, 550 jobs cut

What to do if you're laid off from Wayfair
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Wayfair's biggest hubs: Massachusetts, Kentucky, California, Maine. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Wayfair's hub states run: Massachusetts, Kentucky, California, Maine, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Wayfair layoff and severance questions
What severance has Wayfair given laid-off employees?
In its 2022 and 2023 rounds, Wayfair set severance by location or country, tenure and level, with a U.S. minimum of 10 weeks' pay both times, according to the August 2022 memo and the January 2023 memo. Shah's January 2024 note promised severance, employee assistance and alumni networking support but named no minimum. If you've been offered a package, those earlier terms are worth comparing against, though each round set its own.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Wayfair?
In the 2022 and 2023 rounds, laid-off U.S. staff kept vesting existing equity after the cut, through October 2022 under the August 2022 memo and through March 2023 under the January 2023 memo. Those were terms for those rounds. If you hold unvested shares and have separation papers, it's worth checking the last vesting date they give against your grant schedule.
