Laid off from Americold.
Americold, the Atlanta cold-storage company, has been leaving warehouses it calls underperforming since 2025, and it's winding down an automated Lancaster, Pennsylvania warehouse built for Ahold Delhaize. Its filings in our tracker over the same years all come from the Atlanta area. Separately, it has cut indirect staff.

The most recent Americold layoff we've found
The newest event in our WARN tracker is the closing of 6180 Xavier Drive SW in Atlanta, where Georgia's Xavier Drive notice set August 31, 2026 as the expected end of all 69 jobs, automation and controls roles among them. Fifteen more buildings were idled or listed for sale, the company told analysts on its August 2026 call.
What Americold layoffs have meant for employees
Americold's cuts in Georgia have come at the level of whole buildings. The two 2026 notices, Tradewater Parkway's and Xavier Drive's, each set a permanent closing covering every job on site, and the 2025 Pleasantdale Road cuts, filed in Georgia's record as a reduction in force, came as six separate notices in our WARN tracker that together reached nearly every job in the building. If your site has had one notice, Pleasantdale Road is the record's example of more following, and if your building is on the idle or for-sale list Americold described on its August 2026 call, these are the nearest examples on record of what that has looked like for the people inside.
The buildings themselves have gone different ways. Americold handed two leased Atlanta-area warehouses back to their owners in early 2026, saying much of the customer inventory had moved into its nearby facilities and that both would be torn down, and in the second quarter it sold two idled buildings that it said would leave cold storage use. The Pooler warehouse near Savannah went to another cold-storage operator instead, Meatingplace reported. The company booked $47.1 million of impairment charges in 2025, mostly for warehouses it expected to leave, and its severance costs rose $1.1 million that year, which the 10-K puts down mainly to increased workforce reductions. If you'd rather stay in cold storage, the nearby Americold sites are where the Atlanta inventory went, by the company's own account on its May 2026 call.
Who was on those lists differed by building. At Pleasantdale Road, 106 of the first 110 jobs cut were hourly and none were union-represented, while both 2026 closings included union jobs, and at Tradewater the non-union supervisors, clerks and inventory staff were on the same notice as the union forklift operators. Managers were on the closing lists too, from Tradewater's general manager to the warehouse, operations and maintenance managers named at Xavier Drive. Company-wide, 85 of Americold's 231 warehouses had union-represented workers at the end of 2025, under 77 separate collective bargaining agreements, 9 of which were up for negotiation in 2026.
Americold's other cuts came out of overhead rather than buildings. The first phase, which the company said it had finished early in 2026, came mostly out of indirect labor. Fit for Purpose, which followed it, is a savings and efficiency program aimed mainly at SG&A and support functions, with targets set for the end of the first quarter of 2027, and Americold has said it's meant to capture efficiencies from its earlier spending on labor and technology.
Being automated hasn't kept an Americold building open in this record. The Xavier Drive warehouse, whose notice lists automation technicians, controls staff and automated-operations managers, was set to close in 2026. Americold is winding down the automated Lancaster distribution center it developed for Ahold Delhaize USA, and the Plainville, Connecticut fulfillment center was idled, apart from short-term ice production, without starting the work it was built for, its 8-K filing shows. Workers in automation roles landed on the same Xavier Drive notice as forklift operators, so in this record the closings reached technical and handling jobs alike.
A notice's date can move. At Pleasantdale Road, Americold told Georgia the actual layoff date was September 5, 2025, not the September 19 date on its filing, and that first notice already listed multiple expected dates. If you've received a notice with a separation date and you're lining up rent, insurance or a new job around it, it's worth leaving room for the date to move, as it did there. If you worked at one of the Atlanta buildings, Georgia's claim rules are at Georgia unemployment benefits.

What to do if you're laid off from Americold
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Americold's biggest hubs: Georgia, Utah, Iowa, Illinois. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Americold's hub states run: Georgia, Utah, Iowa, Illinois, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Americold layoff and severance questions
What severance has Americold given laid-off employees?
No package terms for hourly or salaried staff are on record. Americold put company-wide severance and other compensation costs at $10.35 million for the six months to June 2026 in its 10-Q, against $4.01 million a year earlier, in one line covering executive separations, reorganizations, acquisition and efficiency cuts, workforce reductions at exited warehouses and stock awards, without allocating the total. Its Executive Severance Benefits Plan covers eligible executives, and if you're weighing an offer against what coworkers got, those totals can't show what any one person received.
How many WARN notices has Americold filed?
Americold has 16 filings under its own name in our WARN tracker, going back to 1999, and four more from businesses it later bought, 20 in all. The 8 with layoff dates since the start of 2025 cover 308 jobs, every one at an Atlanta-area warehouse, and the largest Americold filing in the tracker listed 1,032 jobs in Forest Park, Georgia, with a layoff date in October 2022.
Is Americold closing its Lancaster, Pennsylvania warehouse?
The automated Lancaster building is set to wind down by the close of 2026, or up to six months later by mutual agreement, under the termination deal in Americold's 8-K filing with Ahold Delhaize USA's distribution arm. The Lancaster and Plainville projects weren't meeting Americold's return expectations and would have needed more capital, time and resources, the company said during its August 2026 earnings call, and it had listed both buildings for sale. If you work there, Pennsylvania unemployment benefits has the state's rules for a claim.
Is Americold closing more warehouses?
Americold counted 15 buildings idled and awaiting exit or on the market as of its August 2026 call, beyond the 10 underperforming facilities it had left since launching the program in 2025. Nine sites had been on its 2026 list as of its May 2026 call, two of them already exited and most of the rest idled and for sale.
