Laid off from Cintas.

Cintas has cut jobs by closing uniform plants, sometimes after buying the competitor that ran them, and has told workers they could apply at its other sites. Waiting to find out whether that ends in a new job or a severance check is hard, and it can stretch for months.

What Cintas layoffs have meant for employees

In two closings that followed Cintas purchases, the building went and the customers stayed. When Cintas set the Atlanta closing in 2017, it said it would move those products into its other distribution centers, according to Inside Logistics, and the Bradford Era reported that Bradford businesses Paris Uniform had served would keep being served by Cintas. If a site Cintas bought is slated to close, it's worth asking which Cintas location will take over its work and where the open roles are, since in Atlanta the company pointed workers to openings at its 10 other facilities in that market. Losing a job that way is hard, because the work you did goes on without you. In the Paris case the notice came from the seller, so if a seller issues your notice, it's worth asking which company will handle your final pay and any severance.

Downturn cuts reached past any one building. In fiscal 2009, a year its annual report describes as customers slashing spending while job losses spread, Cintas froze hiring and wages in many parts of the organization and eliminated many overhead positions, ending the year with about 31,000 employees. In 2020 the cutting reached executive pay too, with a board decision WCPO reported that skipped cash incentives for vice presidents and above. If cuts come during a slump, it's worth asking whether the Cintas sites you'd consider are hiring at all, since in 2009 a hiring freeze ran alongside the layoffs.

In the two closings where Cintas described its terms, it set them for that closing. The 2017 Atlanta terms turned on whether Cintas could offer continuing employment, and for the Kentucky plants Cintas reported having no formal or informal severance plan during fiscal 2009's second quarter, then communicated one to those workers on December 2, 2008, according to its December 2009 SEC letter. Terms set for one closing don't bind the next. If you're offered both severance and a job at another Cintas site, it's worth asking in writing whether turning the job down would change the severance, and if continued coverage is part of the offer, how COBRA works lays out what to compare.

For UniFirst workers, the deal hadn't closed as of Cintas's September 2026 results, and neither the reporting we track nor our WARN tracker shows a Cintas layoff round or filing dated 2025 or 2026, or one tied to the deal. If it does close and a UniFirst severance plan covers you now, consider keeping a copy of that plan's description, because the merger agreement ties the first year's severance to the UniFirst plans scheduled in it. If you're a UniFirst employee covered by a union contract, the merger agreement says that contract governs instead of these commitments.

Cintas-related notices sit under several names in our WARN tracker, Cintas, Paris Uniform, Unitog and G&K Services, because a business Cintas bought may have filed under its own name, as Paris Uniform did in 2024, so it's worth trying each name for your site. If you were in the Partners' Plan and your job is ending, timing can matter, because the plan's 2025 annual report says a year's company contribution goes only to people credited with 1,000 hours who are still employed on the last business day of the fiscal year, around May 31. And if you're in the plan and your last day falls near then, it's worth asking whether you'll be credited. What to do with a 401(k) can help you weigh a rollover against cashing out.

Your stock and equity

The Cintas Partners' Plan, as its 2025 annual report describes it, pairs 401(k) savings and profit sharing with an ESOP whose only investment option is Cintas stock. A participant's own contributions vest right away, while ESOP and profit-sharing money vests all at once after three years of vesting service and the company match vests in steps between two and five years of vesting service.

Cintas layoff and severance questions

What severance has Cintas given laid-off employees?

For the 2017 closing of an Atlanta distribution center Cintas got with G&K Services, it said, in a statement Inside Logistics reported, that people it couldn't offer continuing employment would get severance pay, optional continued healthcare coverage and job placement help. For two Kentucky plants that closed in early 2009, Cintas told the SEC in a December 2009 letter that it recorded $1,185,000 in severance for those workers. If severance comes with your notice, it's worth asking how Cintas arrived at the figure.

What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Cintas?

If you're in the Cintas Partners' Plan and your job ends, its 2025 annual report says you can take what has vested as one lump sum, in installments or as a rollover, or ask for your ESOP account in whole Cintas shares, and any plan loan comes due. If Cintas rehires you, the plan lets it use forfeited money first to restore forfeitures for re-employed participants, at its discretion.

What happens to UniFirst employees if Cintas buys UniFirst?

The overwhelming majority of UniFirst employees were expected to have opportunities in the combined company, the two companies said in their March 11, 2026 joint release. If the deal closes, the merger agreement says eligible UniFirst employees who stay on keep at least their base pay for 12 months while they remain employed, and that severance or termination benefits in that time must be substantially comparable to what the applicable UniFirst plan scheduled in the agreement would have provided, though it adds that those terms create no rights for employees.
