Laid off from Fortrex.

Fortrex's crews clean meat and poultry plants other companies own, so one client's decision can end a crew's work at a plant. That happened after a 2022 child labor case against the company, then called PSSI, and in 2025 and 2026 at plants whose owners switched cleaners or closed.

What Fortrex layoffs have meant for employees

A plant can keep running after it drops Fortrex, while the Fortrex crew inside faces layoff or a move. Fortrex's notice to its Austin crew, filed with its 2025 letter to Minnesota, said Quality Pork Processors would bring in another sanitation company, and Tyson said in a statement carried by WOWT that its Madison plant remained operational after a change in contract sanitation that didn't affect any Tyson team member. Fortrex, for its part, told 10/11, the station behind that report, that it was company policy not to discuss customer matters. In the Austin notice, Fortrex told each worker the separation was "not a reflection of you or your work performance" and put it down to Quality Pork Processors' decision. Long service at a plant didn't keep a contract in place. Fortrex had cleaned the Madison plant since 2001 and the Austin plant since 2013 before those clients made the change.

Two openings show up in these events, a Fortrex transfer and a job with whoever takes over the cleaning. The big meatpackers were looking to bring more cleaning in house in 2023 while likely still relying on contractors in many places, the Associated Press reported, and Tyson said its own workers already cleaned about 40% of its plants, so an incoming cleaner can be another contractor or the plant owner. If your plant is changing cleaners, a job with the incoming company may be worth exploring alongside any transfer offer, and at Tyler, by Soules Foods' account to KETK, the incoming provider offered jobs to most of the crew.

At Austin, Fortrex's own offer was a move. The Minnesota letter offered each eligible team member a transfer to a Fortrex location within a reasonable commuting distance and said bumping rights didn't apply, which it explained as no right to take another Fortrex team member's job, and at Siler City, according to Business North Carolina, Fortrex expected to offer the crew transfers to other area plants. That letter and its notice to the crew came in Spanish as well as English. Office staff had no bumping rights either, by the 2024 Kieler notice, which said that of every team member it covered. Whether an offered transfer works comes down to which plant it's at and which shift it carries.

When Tyson planned to close the Lexington plant, there was no incoming cleaner to turn to, and the crew's notice came from Fortrex. Nebraska Public Media called those layoffs a ripple effect of Tyson's planned closing and quoted Fortrex's letter calling Tyson's notice unforeseen, the same word the Minnesota letter used for Quality Pork's.

A run of lost contracts followed the Labor Department's child labor case against PSSI, which ended in a December 2022 consent order requiring an outside compliance specialist and penalties paid the following February, according to the Labor Department. The consent order had PSSI agree to follow child labor law in all of its operations nationwide, not only at the plants in the case. By May 2023 Tyson and JBS had dropped the company at several plants, particularly where investigators confirmed children were working, the same AP report said, while Cargill cut ties entirely, so PSSI lost all of its Cargill work.

Texas holds more Fortrex and PSSI filings than any other state in our WARN tracker, and North Carolina and Nebraska have had two each since the start of 2025. For workers in those three states, the state pages are Texas unemployment benefits, North Carolina unemployment benefits and Nebraska unemployment benefits.

What to do if you're laid off from Fortrex

Fortrex layoff and severance questions

Is Fortrex the same company as PSSI?

Yes. Fortrex is the new name of Packers Sanitation Services Inc., or PSSI, as Nebraska Public Media reported, and WOWT put the rebranding in early 2025. Notices from before the change went out under Packers Sanitation Services or PSSI, one 2022 Minnesota notice as Packer Sanitation Services, so it's worth searching our WARN tracker under each name.

What severance has Fortrex given laid-off employees?

When PSSI chose to move its Kieler, Wisconsin, headquarters to Atlanta, its 2024 WARN notice said severance for the affected team members would vary by tenure and job grade. For its Austin plant crew, Fortrex's 2025 Minnesota letter promised all earned wages and agreed-upon benefits on the next regular payday along with a transfer offer, and it mentions no severance pay.

Is Fortrex laying off workers in 2026?

Yes. Our WARN tracker holds nine Fortrex filings dated 2026, covering 909 jobs in eight states, from a Siler City notice in January to a Delaware notice dated October 6.
