The most recent Family Dollar layoff we've found
Family Dollar's notice, which Supply Chain Dive reported in March, put the second and last group of Matthews warehouse layoffs on Aug. 12, 2026 or in the 14 days that followed. The company told WSOC it would offer severance packages, unemployment assistance and a job fair before the closing.
What Family Dollar layoffs have meant for employees
Family Dollar's two warehouse closings on record described severance only in broad strokes. In Matthews the notice split the staff across two separation dates, each with a 14-day window, so a last day could fall up to two weeks after the scheduled date, and people in the same building faced their decisions at different times. If you're in the later group and a job that starts sooner comes along, it's worth getting in writing whether leaving before your date changes the severance package Supply Chain Dive says the notice offered. The notice also gave workers no right to displace anyone in a job at another company facility. In West Memphis the company's statement to WMC promised severance plans for those who were eligible, so if you're told you don't qualify under a plan like that, asking for its eligibility terms in writing is a reasonable step.
Under both owners, store closings have been described as decisions about individual locations. Dollar Tree's 2024 store review weighed each store's performance, and Family Dollar said in its March 2026 release that, under its new owners, it had closed underperforming stores. The 2024 letter to Ohio that Spectrum News quoted offered only an attempt, as openings allowed, to place employees who expressed interest in nearby stores. If your store is closing and you'd take a spot at another, you can find out how and when to say so, and it's worth keeping a copy of whatever answer you get.
Both changes of ownership were followed about a year later by cuts in Matthews. Corporate layoffs came about a year after Dollar Tree's 2015 purchase, in the Charlotte Observer's account carried by WBTV, and WSOC dated the warehouse notice to about a year after the sale Dollar Tree's July 2025 release announced as complete. Corporate cuts in between came through consolidation, as Dollar Tree moved to fold the Matthews headquarters into its Chesapeake offices and paired relocation offers with transition benefits and outplacement for everyone affected, according to its 2018 announcement. If you're offered a move in a reorganization, you can find out before you answer whether turning it down keeps the transition benefits, since that announcement extended them to all affected associates.
For anyone let go in the year after the sale, the buyer's first-year promises are a useful yardstick, though they were made to Dollar Tree and the sale agreement says workers have no rights under them. The severance schedule those promises point to isn't in the filed agreement either. If your package came from that year, it's reasonable to find out which plan paid it and whether that plan credited your service from before the July 2025 closing.
If your site turns up in a new filing, the notice itself is worth reading for the lines the Matthews one carried, its dates, any severance package and whether bumping rights exist. If you worked at the Matthews warehouse, North Carolina's rules for claims are at North Carolina unemployment benefits, and anyone whose store closed in Ohio can find that state's at Ohio unemployment benefits. For store staff in New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Tennessee, states where our WARN tracker has earlier Family Dollar notices, the pages are New Jersey unemployment benefits, Pennsylvania unemployment benefits and Tennessee unemployment benefits. If severance arrives with a release to sign, our notes on negotiating severance are worth a read before you answer.

What to do if you're laid off from Family Dollar
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Family Dollar's biggest hubs: North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Family Dollar's hub states run: North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Family Dollar layoff and severance questions
What severance has Family Dollar given laid-off employees?
Severance appears in the record for three Family Dollar closings. The Matthews warehouse notice Supply Chain Dive read offered a severance package; in West Memphis in 2022 the company's statement to WMC cited severance plans for those who qualified, plus outplacement; and the 2018 headquarters move counted one-time severance-related benefits among its costs in Dollar Tree's 2018 release. None of the three puts a dollar figure or a formula on the package.
What did Family Dollar's 2025 sale agreement say about employees?
The sale agreement had the buyer keep on everyone employed at the closing and, for a year, give each pay and target incentives at least as good as before, comparable benefits overall and severance at least equal to a schedule to the agreement. Earlier service was to count under its benefit plans, except for pension accruals, retiree health or welfare plans and equity awards. Its employee section also gives workers no rights of their own and requires no one to keep them on for any period.
What happens to Family Dollar employees when a store closes?
In the 2024 closings, Family Dollar's human resources vice president wrote to Ohio, in a letter Spectrum News quoted, that the company would, “to the extent feasible and subject to availability,” try to offer jobs at nearby stores to employees of closing stores who expressed interest. The same letter put the end of those jobs at about April 20, 2024. It speaks for one state's closings that year, and a later closing can bring different terms.
How many WARN notices has Family Dollar filed?
Eight Family Dollar filings sit in the state archives our WARN tracker collects, from two Tennessee store notices in 2014 to the March 2026 Matthews warehouse notice, the only one dated after 2024. The count stops at those archives, so it leaves out Family Dollar's 2024 closing letter to Ohio, which Spectrum News said could affect as many as 265 store workers. New Jersey and Pennsylvania store filings in the count list 94 and 62 jobs on April 20, 2024, the layoff date those states record.
