Laid off from MITRE.
MITRE runs research centers for federal agencies, and its layoff rounds in 1994, 2013 and 2025 each came as federal money tightened or was about to. The squeeze in 2025 reached MITRE's own finances, and it borrowed to pay severance to the people it let go.
What we know about MITRE severance and layoffs
- About 1,800 employees cut in MITRE's 2025 reductions in force
- $128.6 million severance and benefits charge for MITRE's 2025 reductions
- 442 McLean jobs on the only MITRE notice in our WARN tracker
- $2.32 billion in 2025 revenue, down from $2.47 billion the year before
- About 8,000 workers at more than 60 sites, per Virginia Business in September 2025
The most recent MITRE layoff we've found
MITRE asked Fairfax County in July 2026 to rework the master plan for its Tysons headquarters campus, folding the office space it had planned for five new buildings into two towers and replacing one existing building and three empty lots with housing. The application, FFXnow reported, cites "changes in federal government contracting" and MITRE's "future workforce needs."
What MITRE layoffs have meant for employees
MITRE's April 2025 round came with a Virginia layoff notice for McLean and a company statement that Virginia Business quoted, and FFXnow, citing the Washington Business Journal, reported that the cuts would include other locations as well as the headquarters. The year's cuts kept going after that. MITRE's 2025 audited statements describe reductions across the whole year, a total well beyond the jobs on that notice. If you were let go later in the year, the April figures cover only that round, and the audited total is the fullest count on record.
MITRE has tied the cuts to federal contracts. Its audited statements link the year's reduction to government contract reductions, and a spokesperson's comment to the Washington Business Journal, as FFXnow relayed it, called the April layoffs "a result of lost or canceled contracts." The Department of Government Efficiency claimed $28.5 million in canceled MITRE contracts through late March, at agencies from the IRS to FEMA, though Virginia Business noted reports of errors in DOGE's data. IRS "visioning support services" and NIH health equity work were among the canceled contracts FFXnow named.
Chief executive Mark Peters gave Washington Technology a broader account. He said some of the jobs were consulting work the nonprofit had drifted into over the years, that not every layoff traced directly to a canceled contract, and that MITRE had assumed a certain pipeline of work coming into the year before the shift in priorities changed it. MITRE was already shifting its focus to its core work of running federally funded centers and what he called "hard engineering," he said, and DOGE's cancellations sped that up. If your work at MITRE looked like consulting, his line to that publication is worth knowing, "If we are looking like consultants or a kind of job shop, that's not Mitre's role."
MITRE expected to recover the April round's severance costs under its federal government contracts and to pay them out within the year, its 2024 audited statements say. The following year's statements show it took on long-term notes amid what they call "government budget disruptions and payment delays," funded the severance payments with them, and closed the year with about $151 million less in revenue from operations. For the reduction as a whole, the same statements say final payments were made by January 2026.
MITRE keeps a second headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, alongside its Tysons campus, FFXnow's July 2026 report noted. If you worked in Virginia, Virginia unemployment benefits is where to read up on that state's rules, and if you worked out of Bedford, Massachusetts unemployment benefits has the Massachusetts version. If you were covered by a MITRE medical plan and are sent details on continuing that coverage, how COBRA works is general background.
Two earlier reductions that ended up in court turned on performance ratings. In 2013 everyone with a 3, the lowest score, on the 2012 evaluation went into the reduction, as HR Daily Advisor recounted the ruling. That score came from "laddering," a system MITRE used for only three years that ranked every employee against peers. A technical staff member whose fall 1990 rating put him in his division's bottom ten percent was laid off a few months later with 118 others, a 1996 First Circuit opinion records. If you're trying to understand why you were selected in a later round, it's worth asking which evaluation the decision drew on and what it said. Past rounds don't bind future ones, but in both of those cases the rating was the document that counted.
A sourced history of MITRE layoffs
2025, reductions in force total about 1,800
About 1,800 employees were cut in reduction-in-force actions taken throughout 2025, MITRE's 2025 audited statements say, with a $128.6 million one-time severance and benefits charge. Most separations were done by December 31.
April 2025, about 700 laid off in one week
About 700 were laid off in April's first week, costing $35.7 million in severance, MITRE's 2024 audited statements say. Virginia's notice listed 442 jobs in McLean, with June 3 as its impact date.
April 2013, 105 laid off over sequestration worries
Worried about a possible federal sequestration, MITRE laid off 105 employees across its offices in a reduction announced April 17, according to HR Daily Advisor's account of a later court ruling.
October 1994, 300 laid off ahead of a funding cut
MITRE laid off 300 of its 5,500 employees, the International Directory of Company Histories records, as one of ten federally funded centers set to lose $100 million of $1.35 billion. A Boston Globe headline put nearly half of the planned cuts in Bedford.
What to do if you're laid off from MITRE
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. MITRE's biggest hubs: Virginia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what MITRE's hub states run: Virginia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
MITRE layoff and severance questions
What severance has MITRE given laid-off employees?
MITRE's audited statements give its severance as company-wide totals. The 2024 statements record $35.7 million in severance for the roughly 700 people laid off in early April 2025, money MITRE expected to recover under its federal contracts, and the 2025 statements book a one-time charge of $128.6 million for severance and benefits across the whole year's reduction in force. If you were offered severance, how your own amount was worked out is a fair question to put to MITRE, since neither filing breaks the totals down by person.
Did MITRE file a WARN notice for its layoffs?
Just one MITRE filing appears in our WARN tracker, the Virginia notice dated April 2, 2025, for 442 jobs in McLean. About four times that many people were cut across the year's reduction-in-force actions, by the count in MITRE's 2025 audited statements.
Can laid-off MITRE employees elect retiree health coverage?
Some of the people MITRE let go involuntarily in 2025 elected retiree medical coverage, its 2025 audited statements say. The plan's benefits generally end at age 65, with a small grandfathered group covered until 70, and it stopped subsidizing coverage for new employees as of January 1, 2016. If you joined MITRE before 2016 and lost your job in a reduction, you could ask whether that plan is open to you and, if so, what you'd contribute.
Is MITRE laying off employees in 2026?
MITRE's lone notice in our WARN tracker is from April 2025, and its 2025 audited statements account for the cuts made during 2025. Neither one establishes a 2026 round of layoffs.
