Laid off from Polaris.
Polaris's plant closings on record came when work moved to other plants or a product line was dropped. Osceola, Wisconsin's engine plant, now set to close, was first slated to shut in 2010. Its other reported cuts, in 2009, 2016 and among salaried staff in 2024, came in down years.

The most recent Polaris layoff we've found
Polaris set the Osceola closing in phases, with about 26 of the 189 job losses expected on July 27, 2026, its April 20, 2026 letter to Wisconsin's Dislocated Workers Unit says, and the rest on dates by job title before the plant's planned closing on or about January 31, 2027.
What Polaris layoffs have meant for employees
If you work at the Osceola plant, the schedule in Polaris's letter to Wisconsin matters more than the closing date. It sets anticipated separation dates by job title from July 2026 into January 2027, and some titles show up on more than one date. Assemblers are split across July 27, September 17 and November 5, so a title alone won't settle which date is yours, and the letter gives even the first of those a 14-day window. The letter also says none of the affected employees has a collective bargaining representative and no bumping rights are available, and that Polaris will update the notice if its information changes. Early reports, which WPR and Spectrum News published before Polaris filed with the state, put the count at about 200 and about 230, and the letter's own total is lower. Some of the production is moving rather than ending. The remaining powertrain and component production is set to go to other Polaris plants, a spokesperson said in remarks WPR carried, so for some people the decision is whether to follow it. Where a transfer is offered, its plant, its pay and its start date are what turn relocation support into a choice you can weigh.
Polaris has paired its closings with a chance at work elsewhere in the company before. In 2010, when it planned to shut Osceola, the people losing jobs could apply at other Polaris plants or with suppliers that would keep making parts in town, a spokeswoman said, according to MPR News, as Polaris negotiated to sell some parts processes and equipment to those suppliers. When Polaris announced Milford's closing in 2017, part of the workforce had the option of other plants, per the AP story KELO carried, which still put the number left out of work at 275 to 300. In 2020 some Syracuse workers were to have opportunities at the Elkhart boat campuses, Boating Industry reported, and Polaris said it would keep building its Bennington, Godfrey and Hurricane brands there. Each time, the chance on record reached some of the people affected, and the relocation support Polaris described for Osceola follows the same pattern.
Beyond the plant closings, cuts have come in down years, and in 2024 they reached the salaried ranks. Half of the 2016 layoffs were in the Twin Cities, where Polaris is based, according to MPR News, and CEO Mike Speetzen said on the January 2025 call that the 2024 salaried cut was aimed at higher levels. The restructuring costs in Polaris's 2025 annual report, mostly severance and other employee costs, rose from $8.2 million in 2023 to $23.4 million in 2024 and came to $20.1 million in 2025, a year in which the report says Polaris reduced the size of its workforce again.
The Indian Motorcycle sale reshaped the company as well as Osceola. Polaris agreed in October 2025 to sell a majority interest, the sale closed in 2026's first quarter, and the annual report says completing that separation further reduced Polaris's own workforce. If your job was with Indian Motorcycle, the sale moved that business into a standalone company in which Carolwood LP bought the majority, and Spectrum News reported Indian's production moving to a plant in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
If your Polaris job was in Wisconsin, Wisconsin unemployment benefits covers weekly benefit amounts and applying there, and layoffs in Wisconsin lists the state's other notices. If it was in Minnesota, the same ground is covered in Minnesota unemployment benefits, and if it was in Indiana or Iowa, in Indiana unemployment benefits and Iowa unemployment benefits.
A sourced history of Polaris layoffs
January 2026, Osceola, Wisconsin engine plant closing
Indian Motorcycle's planned move of its powertrain work to Iowa would leave Osceola without the engine volume it needs, Polaris said in a statement Spectrum News reported. A spokesperson quoted by WPR said Polaris would offer separation benefits, outplacement assistance and relocation support.
2024, almost 10% of salaried workforce cut
Polaris took almost 10% of its salaried workforce out, aimed at higher levels, CEO Mike Speetzen said on its January 2025 earnings call, as part of cost cuts sizing the business to market conditions.
April 2020, Syracuse, Indiana boat plant closing
Polaris said it would drop its Rinker, Striper and Larson FX boats and close their Syracuse plant, eliminating 120 jobs, Boating Industry reported, with Elkhart opportunities for some workers. Polaris Boats' notice in our tracker lists 100.
April 2017, Milford, Iowa plant closing
Polaris planned to close Milford, according to an AP story KELO carried, moving its all-terrain and utility vehicle work to Alabama, Minnesota and California. A spokeswoman said some could transfer to other plants, leaving 275 to 300 out of work.
January 2016, about 100 layoffs
Polaris was laying off about 100 workers, half of them in the Twin Cities, according to MPR News, as it reported double-digit drops in quarterly sales and earnings and worked to cut labor costs by 7 percent.
May 2010, Osceola plant closing plan
Polaris said it would close Osceola, according to MPR News, putting more than 500 out of work and moving work to Roseau, Spirit Lake and Monterrey, Mexico. In April 2011 it kept some engine work, Powersports Business reported, saving about 50 assembly jobs.
January 2009, 460 job cuts
Polaris was cutting 460 jobs as its sales slumped, MPR News reported, 160 of them full-time and the rest contractors, part-time and temporary workers. Earlier that week it cut Ranger production at Roseau, eliminating 110 employees.
What to do if you're laid off from Polaris
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Polaris's biggest hubs: Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Polaris's hub states run: Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Polaris layoff and severance questions
What severance has Polaris given laid-off employees?
When it announced the Osceola closing, Polaris said it would offer the people affected separation benefits and outplacement help and would support relocation, according to WPR. Neither an amount nor a formula for those benefits is on record. Polaris's 2025 Form 10-K counts severance and other employee-related expenses as most of its restructuring costs in each year from 2023 through 2025.
How many WARN notices has Polaris filed?
Polaris has three filings in our tracker, a 2017 notice for Milford, Iowa listing 275 jobs, a 2020 Polaris Boats notice for Syracuse, Indiana listing 100, and the April 2026 Osceola, Wisconsin notice listing 189, the only one dated 2025 or later. None was filed under Indian Motorcycle's name. Filings by an unrelated pharmacy, hotel and airport lounge with Polaris in their names aren't counted.
What happens to my Polaris ESOP and 401(k) if I'm laid off?
Polaris's Form 10-K for 2025 says an employee's ESOP account vests equally after two and three years of service, and that 401(k) contributions, which the company matches dollar for dollar up to 5% of eligible pay, vest immediately. It doesn't say how a layoff affects either account.
