Laid off from Synopsys.

Since late 2025, losing a job at Synopsys has mostly meant being part of the reorganization that followed the Ansys merger. It reached engineers and back-office staff alike, it came in waves instead of one announcement day, and in Sunnyvale each notice set its last day months ahead.

The most recent Synopsys layoff we've found

Synopsys's board raised the restructuring's expected cost in August 2026 to $425 million to $500 million, its quarterly report shows, and on August 31 the company filed another California notice, this one for 128 jobs at its Sunnyvale campus, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

What Synopsys layoffs have meant for employees

If your job was cut in Synopsys's post-Ansys reorganization, or you're still waiting to hear whether it will be, that's a bleak way to learn what a merger means, and it helps to know how wide the company drew the plan. The board tied the cuts to the merger, saying they'd let Synopsys invest in key growth opportunities and run more efficiently once the deal was done, and the 8-K made the plan's overall timetable subject to local law and to consultation requirements. At the end of fiscal 2024, 80% of Synopsys's roughly 20,000 employees worked outside the United States, and the company wouldn't give SFGATE a breakdown of where the cuts would land, so a California notice shows only one corner of the plan.

In Sunnyvale, technical roles weren't insulated from the cuts. Engineering jobs showed up on both notices the press broke down by role, and the San Francisco Chronicle found the newest one weighted toward engineering and R&D. Synopsys's notices turn up in our WARN tracker when you search the Synopsys name, and the state's wider record sits on our California layoff notices page. The separations have been scheduled across dates months apart rather than landing at once. If you're still working toward an effective date that hasn't arrived, the time until then can go to lining up references and interviews, or to working out when health coverage ends and what replaces it. Back in November 2025 the company said it was committed to "providing support through the transition," so if you're in the plan, you can ask what that support includes in your case, in writing.

A product exit may have cost jobs as well. Synopsys was ending a suite of fab process control software, six people briefed on the matter told Reuters in July 2026, and three of them said a few dozen staff had already been laid off. Synopsys confirmed only that it was discontinuing some legacy manufacturing analytics products. If your role sat on one of those products, it's worth asking HR whether your exit counts as part of the restructuring plan and getting the answer in writing, since that's the plan the filings tie to severance and other termination benefits.

Synopsys has been through this before. Its filings describe a reorganization in 2021 that paired involuntary cuts with a Voluntary Retirement Program and another in fiscal 2023 built on involuntary terminations, and by expected cost the current plan is the largest of the three. If you're near retirement and still on the payroll, you can ask HR whether a voluntary option is on the table this time, since the company has offered one before, and whether you'd meet the age and service test in its Bridge to Medicare Plan.

Some of what ends with the job comes with a clock. A vested 401(k) balance over $1,000 has four ways out, according to Synopsys's Leaving Synopsys page, from a cash lump sum to a rollover, installments or leaving it in the plan, but a balance of $1,000 or less is paid out in cash if no choice is made within 60 days of the distributable event. Life insurance stops when employment does, and the conversion and portability options come in a Lincoln Financial packet within two weeks, while money in a health savings account stays yours. If you were based in California, what unemployment pays in California is worth reading alongside those decisions. And if your vested balance is $1,000 or less, that 60-day window is the only election deadline Synopsys's own page states, which makes it the date worth marking first.

What to do if you're laid off from Synopsys

Synopsys layoff and severance questions

How many people is Synopsys laying off?

Synopsys gave a share rather than a number. Its board approved cutting about 10% of the workforce as of fiscal 2025 year-end, with most of the reductions in fiscal 2026 and the plan largely complete by the close of fiscal 2027, per its 8-K. Against a headcount of 28,000, the San Francisco Chronicle put that at up to 2,800 jobs.

What severance has Synopsys given laid-off employees?

Per-person severance terms for the 2025 and 2026 cuts aren't on record in any filing or report we track. Synopsys has described the plan's charges as mostly severance and other termination benefits, along with costs such as certain site closures, in its quarterly report. If you're offered a package, it's worth asking how the amount was worked out and what you'd be agreeing to by signing.

What happens to my benefits if I'm laid off from Synopsys?

If you're on Synopsys's US benefit plans, its Leaving Synopsys page says coverage for medical, dental and vision continues through the month in which employment ends, and that former employees may be able to continue it under COBRA for up to 18 months, with the packet arriving about 14 business days after coverage stops. Life insurance, the health care FSA and ESPP participation stop with employment itself, and ESPP money withheld in the current offering period comes back in the final paycheck.

Who qualifies for Synopsys's Bridge to Medicare Plan?

Under its plan document, restated in January 2025, a former employee counts as a retiree if they were on one of Synopsys's self-funded medical plans the day before leaving, left at 59.5 or older with at least 7 years of service, and are under 65 and not eligible for Medicare, with the retirement date set as the day employment ends. The document lets Synopsys change, suspend or end the plan at any time, so if you think you might qualify, it's worth asking HR to confirm it in writing.

Where has Synopsys filed WARN notices?

Only in California, as far as our tracker goes, where every filing carries the Synopsys name. It holds 2 Synopsys filings covering 183 jobs in 2026, and the November 2025 notices behind the plan's first cuts listed 175 jobs in Sunnyvale, SFGATE reported.
