What Dollar General layoffs have meant for employees
If you work in a Dollar General store, the job losses on record have come through closings, and the company has kept opening stores faster than it has closed them, as its fiscal 2025 results show. Where the company or the local press has spoken about staff at a closing store, the offer on record has been a transfer to a store nearby, as Supermarket News heard from the company in 2024 and 104.5 The Team relayed from News 10 about an Albany store in 2025. A transfer is a real option where stores sit close together and a thin one where they don't. If your store is closing, it's worth asking which store the transfer would be to, whether your hours and hourly rate come with you, and who enters the move in the system, and having the answers in a text or an email you can point to later.
New Orleans shows how thin that offer can get once a city is down to its last store. A Poland Avenue worker quoted by Biz New Orleans said the staff had been told they'd be paid until June 26, which he said wasn't enough to carry them through until they found new work, and a worker from the Earhart store talked about what losing the job did to his ability to look after his family and to what the store gave the neighborhood. If you're in that spot in Louisiana, the state's unemployment benefits page covers how to file there.
The corporate cuts on record came nearly a decade apart, a 2015 restructuring of support functions and a January 2025 cut at the Goodlettsville headquarters that took a slice of several levels at once. The January 2025 notice, as The Tennessean quoted it, said positions were picked by whether their duties could be spread across other roles, the cost savings, shifting business priorities and the disruption to operations, which are all questions about the position. If a recruiter asks why you left, that wording gives you a plain answer, and talking about a layoff with recruiters covers how much to say. If you were at the Goodlettsville headquarters, Tennessee's unemployment benefits page covers filing there.
The January 2025 package came with a release of age discrimination claims, and the EEOC says waivers of those claims follow a federal statute written for older workers. If you were 40 or older and among the people it was offered to, the agency explains that a release asked of a whole group gives each person 45 days or more to weigh it, and that the paperwork has to name the unit Dollar General chose from, with titles and ages for the people it let go. If you kept your notice, it's worth reading those ages against what you know of your own team. If you sign a waiver like that, the EEOC says it still doesn't stop you from filing a discrimination charge with the agency, and an employer can't lawfully make you return the money for filing one. If you'd like to press on the terms, negotiating a severance agreement is worth reading, and job hunting later in a career picks up from there.
The warehouse side of the company has its own history. Dollar General's one filing in our WARN filings tracker belongs to the Homerville, Georgia distribution center it shut in 2000, after its annual report laid out a plan for a newer Florida site to take over most of the stores Homerville served. If you work at one of the distribution centers today and word of a closing reaches you, the tracker and your state's layoffs page, such as Georgia's layoff notices, are worth checking for a filed notice.
