What Huntington Ingalls layoffs have meant for employees
If you were among the salaried Newport News staff furloughed in 2025, the hardest part may have been the limbo. HII said it chose whom to furlough by weighing current and future work and performance, and it framed the move around accountability and efficiency, Virginia Business reported. By the time of a November report, the outcomes had split three ways, with about a third laid off, 99 gone by resignation or retirement, and the rest back at the yard. Being furloughed didn't settle anyone's fate, and the people laid off in November had already gone months without pay by the time that decision came. If you went through it and you're angry about how it was handled, that's fair.
That mix of reasons matters if you're explaining the gap to a recruiter. Performance was one factor HII named in choosing who to furlough, and the November cut was a reduction in force that followed a careful review of the salaried workforce and business needs, a review the company's spokesperson told The Virginian-Pilot weighs build schedules and the timing of contracts. Calling it a reduction in force after a review of salaried staffing uses HII's own terms, and how to explain a layoff has wording that keeps it to a sentence or two. It's your story to tell, and the company's own description gives you plain words for it.
The two salaried cuts on record at the yard came with much the same explanation. In 2021 president Jennifer Boykin called the layoffs and demotions necessary cost controls for the shipyard's future and the affordability of its ships, according to Virginia Business, and in 2025 Corillo called the layoff a necessary step toward efficiency and the affordability of the ships the yard builds and overhauls for the Navy. HII also told investors on its February 2026 earnings call that it hired more than 6,600 shipbuilders in 2025, doubled its outsourcing, and met a $250 million cost target mostly by removing overhead and support labor costs. If your job sits in overhead or support, that's the part of the payroll the company has said it trimmed.
For the San Antonio team on the courts contract, the reason on record is the 2024 recompete. HII tied the planned layoffs to losing it and to what it called a significant reduction in business, while saying its cyber operations teams in the same city would keep going, MySA reported. If you work on a Mission Technologies program that's coming up for recompete, it's worth asking your manager early what happens to the team if the award goes elsewhere, and whether openings on other contracts get posted inside the company first. If you're already on notice, you can ask HR whether you're free to apply for those openings before your last day, and whether doing so changes anything about your separation.
About 45% of HII's employees work under one of 13 union contracts, according to its 2025 Form 10-K, and the Newport News agreements run until 2030 and 2031. At Mission Technologies, only 80 employees are covered by a union contract. Ingalls' five agreements were due to expire in March 2026, according to the same filing. If you're represented at any of the three, your local can tell you which contract now covers you and what it says about layoffs and recall. For benefits, what unemployment pays in Virginia covers Newport News and Virginia Beach, Texas unemployment benefits covers San Antonio, and for Ingalls, where HII is Mississippi's largest private employer, there's Mississippi's benefits page.
